“Taiwan and the True Sources of Deterrence.”

Professor Jessica Chen Weiss, Michael J. Zak Professor for China and Asia-Pacific Studies at Cornell University and Director of the Cornell Levinson China and Asia-Pacific Studies (CAPS) program, joined Bonnie Glaser at the German Marshall Fund of the United States and Thomas Christensen at Columbia | SIPA for an insightful podcast at the CSIS China Power Project.

Weiss, Glaser, and Thomas Christensen discussed their recently released article titled “Taiwan and the True Sources of Deterrence.” They underlined the article’s key point, that assurances, alongside threats, are an integral part of effective deterrence.

They emphasized that in order for deterrence to work, the threat of punishment must be not only credible but also conditional.

Finally, the authors outlined what actions each of the three sides - Washington, Beijing, and Taipei - should take to effectively convey assurances to one another.
