At the invitation of CAPS, Dr. JIA Qingguo, PhD ’88, visited Cornell during November 2-5, 2022. A professor and former dean of the School of International Studies at Peking University (Beida), Dr. Jia has played an important role in the establishment of CAPS program and the development of Cornell-Beida academic exchange and cooperation. During his visit, he gave a talk on “China-U.S. Relations: Is There Light at the End of the Tunnel?” to the Cornell community. Against the backdrop of increasingly strained China-U.S. relations in recent years, he addressed the problem of an emerging cold war between China and the United States. “How should we explain this development? What is likely to happen in the foreseeable future? What needs to be done to avoid a disastrous confrontation?” In his talk as well as his meetings with Cornell students and faculty, Dr Jia offered a well-balanced, illuminating perspective as one of the most prominent Chinese America watchers and specialists on China-U.S. relations, shedding light on these critical questions.
